Sharknado before vacation

It is daunting to get all the tasks done before vacation.  I am leaving for my brother's wedding later today and also vacation after the wedding.  All the laundry, cleaning, packing, vacuuming, washing dishes.... So what better way to spend the afternoon folding clothes than watching Sharknado.  Boy was it rough!!!  Now... I know it is a Syfy movie and it was not intended to be scientific at all, but it made Twister look like a PhD documentary.  Entertaining?  Ehh, sure.  Good acting?  Marginal.  Plausible storyline? Not even close.  Not a bad way to spend an afternoon while you are doing chores.
Alright, on to the forecast...  I personally will be keeping a very close eye on Tropical Storm Dorian.  It is churning in the Atlantic and moving at a moderate pace of 17 miles per hour.  If it speeds up then it will fall apart, but right now it could be impacting the US mainland by the end of next week if it holds together.  I reached out to the Hurricane Hunters to see if I could fly with them an intercept the storm once it gets closer and IF, big IF, it stays healthy...

For Ohio... We warm back into the mid 80's for Friday and Saturday and another cold front will bring scattered showers storms for Saturday afternoon and evening.  We cool back with highs near 80 for early next week then another chance for storms toward the middle-end of next week as we warm back again into the upper 80's.  So the warmer temperatures will return... but for now, enjoy the mild temperatures...

I may try to check in via my phone while out of town, so be sure to check back in.  Have a good one!

Fog to storms today

We had some thick fog this morning, but I was able to grab a shot of the full moon setting.  This moon was a Buck Moon or a Thunder Moon depending on who you ask.  But that works out well because my middle name is Buck and there is a Slight Risk for severe storms later today.
The main threat for the storms will be strong winds.  They will roll in for the afternoon and should be out of here by this evening  They are with a cold front that will clear out the humidity and cool us off for the middle part of the week.  We dry out until Saturday when another cold front pushes through.  I hope the rain for Saturday slows down more because my brother is getting married outside on Saturday in Chagrin Falls.

Keep an eye to the sky for severe weather and have a good one!

Good Monday Morning!

Hope you all had a great weekend.  I was up in Cleveland for a family reunion/graduation party.  It was a lot of fun and the weather cooperated, for the most part.  I went golfing Sunday with Dawn's father, brother, and uncle and I finally started playing better.  I shot a 44!  That is my personal record and finished off the nine holes with a birdie.  I retired the ball after the birdie... It is an agreement I made with all of my golf balls.  If they give me a birdie then I release them from their duties.  I wore green shorts and polo and Dawn's brother had a green tee that he gave me before we played and said, "Here is your lucky green tee."  Good times.
A soggy start to the workweek.  Rain showers moving in this morning and even a little lightning as well.  The rain will stick around for most of the day ahead.  More rain for later Tuesday and then we try to dry out for late-week.  The temperatures will at least only be in the lower 80's through the week ahead.  Another cold front pushes in for the weekend, and looks to bring highs back into the 70's.  Looking forward to that.  Grab the umbrella and have a good one!

Have I mentioned that I love my job?

Have I mentioned that I love my job?  The station is having a Fan Drive July 30th, to help donate fans to those who need it.  So today we decided to promote that and have a dunk tank on the morning show.  So dunk the weatherman, if you donate a fan.  Bounce Houses Ohio also brought along a huge water slide that was amazing!
I was happy to take on the task today, especially after the task yesterday.  So Thursday I rode a bike for 50 minutes and see how much water weight I lost.  I sweat out over five pounds in the 50 minutes... ridiculous.  It just goes to show how much water you need to drink if you are outside doing any strenuous activities in this heat(and I did the experiment between 9AM and 10AM when it was still "cool"). Apparently Good Morning America called the station and asked to get video for them to use today.  I didn't get to watch since I was working.
The good news is that today is the end of the heatwave.  It will be the sixth 90°+ day in a row.  Tomorrow a cold front will push through bringing a decent chance for showers and slight chance for severe storms for the late morning and early afternoon.  Sunday we dry out and cool off a little, but the warm weather returns next week with isolated afternoon showers once again.  Enjoy the weekend and stay cool today!  Have a good one!

When will the heat end....

Another hot day, and another, and another.  We melted things in my truck yesterday on the morning show.
Hersehey's chocolate bars were hands down the first to melt.  It was only 9AM and the temperature heated up to 120° in forty minutes.
Today I am riding my bike for close to an hour and see how many pounds I sweat out.  I am guessing close to two or three pounds.  Should be fun, but we are taking the proper precautions.

Heat Advisory for today and tomorrow and then we will see storms on Saturday that will help cool us off a little.  Low 80's with dry weather on Sunday... which is looking like the best day of the next seven.  Gotta get back to the show.  Have a good one!

Another hot day! #OhioWX

First heat wave of the year on tap today for Columbus! We hit 90 on Sunday and 92 Monday so today would be our first heat wave of the year with a forecasted high of 93. The heat continues through the end of the week so stay cool and hydrated.

With all the heat and humidity there will be isolated pop-up showers and storms for the afternoons ahead. Not everyone will see the rain, but isolated locations will experience some heavy rain. More isolated showers and storms for the afternoons through the end of the week.

A strong cold front on Saturday will bring a better chance for storms along with relief from the heat wave. Stay cool and have a good one!

Hot week ahead!

Had a great weekend in Columbus.  Friday night Dawn and I went to a 90's dance party at 5 on King.  It was a LOT of fun and it was interactive, so you tweet your requests and dance til you lose five pounds thanks to sweating.
Before that we went to the Columbus Clippers game.  Lots of fun!
And I picked up a lot of moped projects.  I need to piece together about five mopeds to get them back on the road.

Alright... on to the weather... it is going to be hot this week.  Highs in the low 90's all week long.  Factor in the humidity and it will feel near 100° for the afternoons this week.  With all the heat and humidity there is a slim chance for a spotty shower or storm, but only a slim chance.  No cool down until the weekend when a cold front arrives.  Stay cool, hydrated and have a good one!

Calm after the storm, microburst

What's up everyone!  After the storms Wednesday I needed a break... but instead I have put in about twenty four hours in the last two days.  No tornadoes with the storms, here in Central Ohio, but several microbursts.  The worst was in Hilliard, Ohio.  A microburst is where the updraft cannot sustain all the energy in the storm so a quick rush of cold air rushes downward and SLAMS into the ground.  Once it hits the ground it fans outward at speeds faster than a weak tornado causing more damage than a weak tornado.
I was able to sample the radar data from the time of the microburst and we were able to get winds in the mid 80 mph range.  The NWS confirmed the microburst with winds up to 95 mph.  When I was looking at the damage just minutes after it had happened I knew it wasn't a tornado.  Some of the eye witness accounts said they saw something coming down from the clouds fast and hit the ground and then BAM.  That is not how a tornado works... and the damage was too widespread for a tornado.  The damage from a microburst is more widespread because the winds spread out from the area of the downburst.

Here is an diagram of what a does with the downward winds.

Here is another example I found.

And I leave you with a video of the storm in Hilliard on Wednesday.

Alright, other than an off chance to see a spotty shower thru the weekend... it is looking pretty nice.  Our temperatures will slowly warm up so today will not be the warmest day at the pool, but Saturday will warm up along with a little humidity and a little more by Sunday as well.  By the time we get to early next week we are pushing 90° and about a 30% chance for storms through the middle to end of next week.  Typical Ohio weather for you... I just hope it stays fairly dry for the farmers because we could use a week or so of relatively dry weather.  Well, enjoy the weekend and have a good one!

9AM Update on Severe Weather for Today

We are still under the Slight Risk for severe storms later today across the Ohio Valley.
The Storm Prediction Center has most of Ohio under the 2% chance for a tornado within a 25 mile radius.
There is a better chance for severe winds (58 mph or stronger) with most of Central Ohio in the 30% range for this afternoon.
And a marginal chance for severe hail of 1" or larger with a 15% chance in a 25 mile radius.
The 8AM weather balloon shows a LOT of energy already to start the day.
The area between the red line and the dashed line is the CAPE, Convective Available Potential Energy.  Once we heat up there will be even more energy.  I am not impressed with the wind shear, change of wind direction with height, to sustain tornadic storms.  However SPC is already eyeing the sky for hail and winds.
There is also a Meso Discussion across parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Western Ohio.  There is a 40% chance for a Severe Thunderstorm Watch to be issued.

For Central Ohio we will be dealing with plenty of sunshine through the morning with building clouds by midday.  The strongest of the storms look to be between 2PM and 8PM depending on where you live.  The storms will start across the Northwestern part of the area and move to the South and West.  The good news is that this will bring lower humidity, cooler temperatures, and more sunshine for the end of the week and weekend.  Looking forward to that!

I will be tweeting all watches and warnings for Central Ohio, so be sure to follow my Twitter account, @AndrewWSYX6, for those, or head over to my Facebook page for those warnings as well.  Any questions, fire away!  Stay alert and have a good one!

Quick morning weather update

Morning showers and storms still around, but hopefully the last time I will say that for several days.
More showers and storms later today and some of the storms are expected to be strong.  We are under the Slight Risk for severe weather later today with the main threats being hail and damaging winds, but a slim chance for an isolated tornado.  We will have a better idea on how the atmosphere is shaping up once the 8AM weather balloon is launched.  I will post a more in-depth update later this morning so be sure to check back in.
The good news is that the cold front on the way will blast through late tonight and the above model for 10PM has most of the rain clearing out of here by then.  Tomorrow looks drier, cooler, and humidity dropping throughout the day.  We have a couple of fantastic days ahead so try to get out there and enjoy it.  Again, be sure to check back in later this morning with a more in-depth look at our chances for severe weather.  Got to run down to get ready for the show.  Have a good one!

Flash Flooding - Perry & Morgan Counties

This is a quick mid-show update on the Flash Flood Warning for Perry and Morgan Counties in Ohio. Thanks for all the photos and feel free to upload more to Facebook and Twitter using #OhioWX
This photo really shows how serious it was.  These people were being rescued.  Thanks to @ksu94Gadd for the photo.

If you want to check the forecast... I posted a previous entry earlier with our forecast for the days to come.  Have a good one!

More morning rain

Tracking more morning showers and storms.  The cells in Madison County will mainly push south of I-70 for most of Franklin County.  Downtown Columbus may just miss this cell since they are drifting ESE.

More rain through the morning then pop-up showers and storms for the afternoon and evening.

More storms for Wednesday and a Slight Risk for severe storms late Wednesday as a cold front pushes through.  Hail and strong winds will be the main threat for severe weather for Ohio

Other than an early shower or storm Thursday, we dry out and cool off and what I am most excited for: lowering the humidity.  It looks really nice by the weekend.  Very excited to have one free weekend to relax because every other weekend is booked through Labor Day and beyond... (Unless I am put back on weekends)  So gotta live it up while I can!

Anyway, take the umbrella and have a good one!

Good Monday Morning!

We have a few storms kicking their way through this morning.  A few of the clouds even have mammatus clouds for your Monday morning.
I had an extended weekend in Cleveland.  It was my mother-in-law's birthday weekend and we did a pub crawl on Friday, golfed on Saturday, and I even got to jump on a moped Saturday night.  One of Dawn's neighbors had a moped in their garage and no one thought about telling me until now.
Had a lot of fun and it was great to get a fun weekend in... while I can.
So we are tracking a few morning storms today, but I expect to dry out for the late morning and then more pop-up showers and storms for the afternoon/evening.  Today is the seventeenth straight day of rain somewhere in Central Ohio... But relief is in sight.  For the meantime, pop up showers and storms for Tuesday with humidity VERY high.  Humidity will stay very high for Wednesday with more showers and storms.  Late Wednesday a cold front will plow through Central Ohio bringing relief.  No rain, cooler temperatures, and lower humidity by the weekend.  Looking forward to it.  Until then... keep the umbrella handy and have a good one!

Happy Fourth of July!

I got to wear my festive tie today that I rarely get the chance to wear.  We even had a red white and blue doughnut eating competition.  I took down Carolyn Bruck with no sweat, but I enjoyed her big game that she talked.
I went over to Reynoldsburg last night for the fireworks with Dawn, her cousin Sara and baby Anderson.  Sara's husband was working do it was nice to be able to be there for the baby's first fireworks.  He was a bit fussy since he was up two hours passed his bedtime, but once the fireworks started he was glued to the sky.  Goodtimes.

On the way home we could see Red, White, & Boom over downtown Columbus.  The picture above is from the grand finale.
With all the wet weather the last 13 days... yes, we have had rain somewhere in Central Ohio for the last 13 days... At least the ground has been wet.  I pulled some weeds yesterday in the garden and it is perfect for weeding.
More rain is pushing in now.  You can see on the loop above that there is a decent band of rain moving in from Kentucky.  It is going to be a bit of a soggy holiday, but our chances for severe weather are very low.  Just some steady persistent rain with a rumble or two of thunder.  The rain continues into early Friday then we start to dry out a little for the weekend.  By dry out, I mean we see the spotty rain return instead of the big mass of rain.  So the pop-up showers and storms return for the weekend and early next week along with temperatures climbing slowly up into the upper 80's.  At this point... we likely could see a stretch of 20 days with rain somewhere in Central Ohio.  At least the rain for the weekend and next week looks to be isolated and not widespread like today.

Anyway, enjoy the holiday and stay safe.  I will be spending the next few days with family, so have a good one!

Beach & Florida wx

Coming back from the rallies it takes a day or two until you start seeing all of the photos getting uploaded.  What did we do before social media?  Sit around and share photo albums?  This photo, above, was from the south beach in Chicago from the weekend's moped rally.
This photo was from Saturday night after the Long Short Ride to the beach.  I look kinda mad in the photo.  I was bringing bad news to KZ though that his Maxi seized up when Mark was riding it.  Maybe THAT is why I look so somber.

Speaking of beaches, the weather here in Ohio seems a lot like Florida.  We stay humid with pop-up showers and storms through the rest of the week.  The rain will weaken and die out at night, but you gotta keep an eye to the sky for the upcoming afternoons.  Have a great Tuesday!

Andrew Buck Michael

Chicago Moped Rally #PeddyMutual

The Chicago moped group called Peddy Cash have been around for about ten years and are a well respected group within the community.  Most of the members have been around a while and for their latest moped rally it had the theme of a retirement party.  Such a great time.
There were over three hundred mopeders in town and we had a blast.
I was super bummed I didn't get to ride Friday night because we were ten minutes late.  (Had to stay at the station an extra hour due to severe storms)  So the photo above and some of the others are taken by others.
Lots of fun out there.  Riding in a huge group like that is such a blast.
Our halfway point was the southern most beach in Chicago.  It was my first rally as a Motion Left member, the Goshen, Indiana moped group.
Here is a video I shot before we all jumped onto Lake Shore Drive.  This is not the entire group, only about half of it.
Back home Friday night we had the Northern Lights.  The picture above was taken by Aaron Rigsby in Marysville.  I tried to see if I could see them from Chicago, but obviously WAY too much light pollution to see anything.

So the weather... Ohio has seen severe weather for nine straight days now.  The pattern is not going anywhere anytime soon.  We were starting to dry out in June, but we are more than making up for it now.  I saw a LOT of standing water and minor flooding on my drive back from Chicago last night. So more pop-up afternoon showers and storms possible through the entire week ahead.  While we may have a few storms with hail and HEAVY rain... the chance for severe weather is very small.  Hail and wind will be the main threat.  Our high of 80 today will be the coolest for the entire week ahead.  We slowly will warm up each day into the mid 80's by next weekend.  So keep the umbrella handy and keep an eye to the sky for any holiday plans.  Have a good one!

Best,
Andrew Buck Michael
